SOCIAL LIFE

Polk also had an incredibly frenetic social calendar. One day he would design the logo for The Sierra Club, the next day he would fish with Bruce Porter and John Howard ending up at The Bohemian Grove with his “Les Jeunes” encampment for the weekend. There they would write for The Lark or The Wave over cigars and brandy. Polk would nickname his apartment in Oakland “Stagden” referring to his taste in company and their hedonistic pursuits.

Although Polk became well known for his public antics (had a compulsion to stand on his head at parties) and as a great raconteur, Polk's passion was architecture; specifically San Francisco architecture. It was Polk's life-long dream  to transform the way the world looked at and thought of San Francisco. To transform the dusty cow town by the bay into a world class architectural gem worthy of european adoration. It was because of this unbridled passion for San Francisco that he was so well respected by his peers and elected officials, enough so, that he served as chair on many civic commissions; The Pan Pacific Expo and War Memorial Complex to name just a few.
